Where Your Safari Takes You
Serengeti National Park.
The heart of any Tanzania safari and the stage for the Great Migration, where more than a million wildebeest and zebra move north between the Seronera plains and the Mara River crossings.
Migration river crossings: July–October. Calving in the southern plains: January–March.
Ngorongoro Crater
A collapsed volcanic caldera holding one of Africa’s densest concentrations of wildlife, including black rhino — the reason many travelers complete the Big Five here in a single day.
Excellent year-round; the crater floor is greenest from December to March.
Tarangire National Park
Baobab-studded plains and huge elephant herds along the Tarangire River. Quieter than the Serengeti and an easy first stop out of Arusha.
Best from June to October when animals gather at the river.
Zanzibar
The classic beach ending to a safari: white sand, dhow sailing, spice farms and Stone Town, a short flight from the Serengeti or Arusha.
Driest and sunniest from June to October and December to February.
Nyerere National Park
Tanzania’s vast southern wilderness on the Rufiji River, where boat safaris and walking safaris replace the crowds of the northern circuit. Ideal for a second safari or a longer, wilder itinerary.
Lake Manyara National Park
A compact park under the Rift Valley escarpment known for tree-climbing lions, large baboon troops and flamingos on the soda lake. Often combined with Ngorongoro as a half-day stop.
