The 2026 Guide to Zanzibar’s Mandatory Travel Insurance: Everything You Need to Know
Are you planning the ultimate Tanzania Safari followed by a relaxing getaway on the pristine beaches of Zanzibar? Before you pack your bags, there is a crucial travel requirement you need to know about.
Since October 1, 2024, the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has enforced a strict policy requiring all foreign visitors to hold mandatory inbound travel insurance. This regulation remains fully active in 2026. At Origin Wildlife Safaris, we want to ensure your transition from the wild plains of the Serengeti to the spice islands of Zanzibar is completely seamless. Here is everything you need to know about the mandatory Zanzibar travel insurance.
Why Is Travel Insurance Mandatory for Zanzibar?
The local authorities introduced this requirement to guarantee visitor safety, ensure immediate access to emergency medical care, and build a more resilient tourism infrastructure. It is important to note that this specific policy is exclusively managed and provided by the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC).
Who Needs to Buy the Zanzibar Insurance?
- All international tourists and non-residents entering Zanzibar via air or sea.
- It is strictly required even if you already possess a comprehensive international travel insurance policy from your home country.
- Valid for up to 92 days of consecutive stay (roughly three months).
- Exemption: Transit passengers who remain inside the Zanzibar Airport terminal without officially entering the island do not need this policy.
What Does the Mandatory Policy Cover?
The ZIC policy provides a robust safety net during your stay in the Zanzibar archipelago. Key coverages include:
- Emergency Medical Expenses: Up to USD 50,000 (includes coverage for pandemics and compulsory quarantine).
- Medical Evacuation & Repatriation: Full coverage for emergency transport.
- Personal Accidents: Up to USD 20,000 for accidental disability or death.
- Baggage Protection: Up to USD 200 for delays and up to USD 400 for loss, theft, or damage.
- Personal Liability: Up to USD 30,000.
- Legal & Bail Expenses: Up to USD 2,000.
- Adventure Sports: Coverage for popular island activities like scuba diving and kitesurfing.
- Extended Stays: Covers accommodation and transport for one accompanying person if a medical extension is required.
2026 Pricing: How Much Does It Cost?
The fees are standard and set by the Zanzibar government:
- Adults (18+ years): USD 44 per person
- Children & Teens (3 to 17 years): USD 22 per person
- Infants (Under 3 years): Free of charge
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Apply
While you can purchase the insurance at airport kiosks upon arrival, Origin Wildlife Safaris strongly recommends buying it online before you travel to avoid long queues at immigration. Please note that travel agencies cannot purchase this on your behalf; travelers must complete it individually.
- Visit the Official Portal: Go to the official Zanzibar Tourism inbound portal (visitzanzibar.go.tz).
- Select Your Plan: Choose between Individual, Couple, Family, Group, or Student plans.
- Fill in Your Details: Complete the digital form with your passport, travel, and personal information.
- Make the Payment: Pay the premium securely using a credit card or other available online methods.
- Save Your QR Code: Once processed, you will receive an email with your policy and a unique QR code. Keep a screenshot on your phone and print a physical copy to show immigration officers upon arrival.
Important Tips for 2026 Travelers
- No Exemptions: Failure to present the ZIC insurance QR code can result in denied entry into Zanzibar.
- Airlines vs. Immigration: Your airline might not ask for this document at your departure gate, but Zanzibar immigration officers will check it when you land.
- Emergency Contacts: If you need assistance while on the island, you can reach the ZIC 24/7 toll-free helpline at 0800008005 (within Tanzania) or email inbound@zic.co.tz
